I saw Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie two nights ago, and it blew my mind.
It reminded me of the first time I saw The Science of Sleep by Michel Gondry. Back then, my mind was just, "You can do that in a movie?"
This time, though, I already knew you can do whatever you want. The rules are arbitrary in every aspect of our lives. What really shook me was seeing someone actually doing those kinds of things: that kind of humor, and a story that moves forward as if they were making it up as they went, as if the whole movie was an improv session.
My favorite part is the time-travel stuff, when they interact with their younger selves. I love it because it's a testament to obsession: two guys, two friends, two collaborators, doing something for so long that they have an absurd amount of material to pull off that kind of storytelling. To have conversations with themselves from seventeen years ago without special effects, just a script meticulously choreographed around their old footage.
It's so cool, and so nerdy, which is, obviously, even cooler.
